THE BIG BULL BOWS OUT    by     S. PRABHAKAR

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala who had a trail blazing successful story of wealth creation predominantly through investment in stocks directly in companies and through stock markets died at the age of 62 which according to me is neither too young nor too old enough to go.    Whatever number of years he lived, it was so productive that it is more than many lives achievement.   Starting his journey with a Rs. 5000 investment and taking it upto Rs. 40,000 crores is by no means a small achievement.    When I emphasise on Rs 40,000 crores I am not saying so purely from the money point of view, the type of investments made by him and the enterprises he started and successfully ran including launching of an Airlines, providing direct and indirect employment to thousands of people and above all bringing an investment culture in many people groping in dark in stock markets and be their role model and make them aspire to become someone like him .    What Warren Buffett has been to the World, RJ was to India – no less than that.   The most appreciable thing about him is that though he was known as Big Bull, and always referred to as dictating the stock markets, he took a great care that his name is not tarnished with any scams like Harshad Mehta and Ketan Pareek and I must say he died with his name in tact and it was always taken with lot of respect and reverence by entrepreneurs, industrialists and stock market players.   For me the best quality in him was he always showed lot of patriotism and always positive and upbeat about India.   One will get inspired and get charged whenever one listens to him.   I understand he did spend lot on charity too.

As expected the whatsapp scholars are quick to circulate many messages on his death at relatively younger age of 62 years with a presumption that if one has money he has to live for 80 or 90 years.   People always equate such incidents to greed for wealth creation and try desparately to drive the point that while running after wealth health has been neglected.   Going by the reports in public domain, by his own admission,  he was a chain smoker, consumed mouthful Gutka, and heavy boozer.  He or anybody else having vices like drinking smoking using gutka has nothing to do with wealth but simply their weakness and not having self-control.   Not doing physical exercises is laziness and not due to lack of time due to  wealth creation.  He was not a rickshaw puller or a coolie that he had to work 24 /7 to earn what he earned.   He had thousands of employees to work for him.  Many of our maid servants in our houses,   keep crying that their husbands are dead drunkards and few don't do any work also and take away the money earned by them.  They develop liver problem and die young and suffer till they die.  They didn’t run after money or they isn’t lack of time in their case.  Large number of menfolk who have jobs with fixed timings don't do any exercises and large number of home makers in India with plenty of time in hand struggle to find new TV serials to kill their leisure time but do not do any physical exercise and they try to cover that up by saying we do so much of work at home.  Any amount of work done (other than doing jhadu pocha without the help of a stick) is not a substitute to a structured physical exercise though may be bit better than not moving body at all.

Does every successful person and wealth creator necessarily neglects his/her health.   I do not think so.   if that be so, how come many successful persons in their respective professions created huge wealth, name and fame lived for such long years - few notable mentions are JRD Tata, iconic industrialist 89 years, Pran, the busiest villain and character actor - 93 years, A Nageswara Rao, who along with NTR ruled Telugu industry for over 50 years and acted in close to 300 movies - 91 years, Ram Jethmalani, the most successful and highest paid lawyer 96 years, Kushwant Singh, the most celebrated author and writer 99 years.   The list goes on

It is true whether for RJ or those drunkards living in jhuggis no one can give them an extra second of life whether they created wealth or died pauper.   As reported  RJ said the no one can outsource health creation to others and one has to work on it personally.    Whether rich middle class or poor if one stays away from vices and take out atleast an hour to do walking, other physical exercises and take good and balanced diet, they can lead a healthy life for the number of years  of their life span - long or short.

If we believe in Karma Sidhatam, we come to earth with a count of breaths we take before we leave the world and nothing can change that.  Health depends on various factors including genetic.   Whenever we hear any rich person leaving very young like Puneet Rajkumar in his mid 40s or RJ at relatively not very old age of 62, what we should highlight is the importance of taking care of health, rather than attributing it to their greed for wealth at the cost of everything including health which surely is not true.

The Trio Padma award winners of 2022 from Andhra Pradesh

On 22nd March, 2022 AP Bhavan and AP Government has felicitated three Padma award winners from the state of Andhra Pradesh Mr. Garikapati Narasimha Rao, Dr Sunkara Venkata Adinarayana Rao
and  Late Gosaveedu Shaik Hasan (represented by his grandson).   I attended the program – first in the last two years since outbreak of pandemic.   All three awardees well deserve the Padma award and brought respect and dignity to the award conferred on them.

Garikapati Narasimha Rao – conferred Padmasri in Literary & Education category

Garikipati Narasimha Rao, 62 years, a renowned Avadhani and religious Pravachana karta (discourser) is the most popular and recognisable person among the three awardees and got Padmasri under `Literature and Education’ category.   Garikapati has become a household name for his discourses on Hindu religion/epic and personality development.    He has great sense of humour and mixes contemporary issues with his religious discourses of epics like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Bhagavatam etc., which made him popular among youth also and motivated them to go back to their religious roots.     Garikapati’s discourses are broadcast on radio, telecast on prominent Telugu channels, receive millions of views on YouTube and are circulated on Whatsapp group.

What sets Garikapati apart from others is his ability to do Astavadhanam (with eight Pruchakas) / Satavadhanam (with hundred Pruchakas) / Sahasravadhanam (with thousand Pruchakas).   While doing the Avadhanam, The Avadhani spins out verses confirming to the Telugu grammer on literally any subject under the Sun which Pruchakas (who themselves are literary scholars) throw at him as challenge.   The most challenging part of the `Avadhanam’ is at the end of completing the entire process he has to recite back all the verses he made for 8 to 21 days as the cases may be at one go without any help of notes/computers.    For doing such a tough task one need to have a super computer like brain apart from having literary competency. Garikipati has successfully done 288 Avadhanams including a 21 days long Sahasravadhanam with 1116 Pruchakas in 1996 which found a place in Guinness world record books.   The process of Avadhanam is done only in Telugu language and Garikipati is one of the very few with ability to do Avadhanam - a dying art.

For over the last one decade I listen to his Pravachan daily in the morning during my walk.   For the first time i could listen to him live delivering fantastic discourse on Gita for one hour non stop.   Happy that the audi was packed to the brim and he was accorded a rousing reception like a film star.

Dr  Sankara Adinarayana Rao – conferred Padmasri in Medcine category

Dr Adinarayana Rao, 82 years, is a well known Orthopaedic Surgeon who served thousands of polio patients.   Born in Bhimavaram of West Godavari,  Dr. Adinarayana Rao completed his MBBS as well as PG from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.   He is also trained in micro-vascular and hand surgery in Germany. He served as a professor of Traumatology and Orthopaedics in the Andhra University. Later, he worked as a Civil Surgeon in the King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam. Apart from this, he has also presented many research papers in various state and national level conferences and seminars, and authored two books, Surgery on Polio Disability and Principles and Practices of Orthopaedics.

In an illustrious career of six decades, Dr. Adinarayana Rao has rendered his services to the poor and needy. He has successfully completed over one lakh surgeries till date.  Dr. Adinarayana Rao had previously received the National Award  from the Prime Minister of India, for his welfare work for the disabled  in 1988 and also received the National Award for Child Welfare from the President of India in 2014.  He is currently managing trustees of Free Polio Surgical & Research Foundation and director general of Prema Group of Hospitals and Institutions.

Ghaik Hassan was an exponent of Nadaswaram, a traditional piped classical instrument of South India.   He was the symbol of India’s great secular tradition and was `Astana Vidvaan’ and performed in Seeta Rama temple in Bhandrachalam for 46 years from 1950 to 1996.

Investing in US stock in India by Indian Investors

by S. Prabhakar

National Stock Exchange's (NSE) International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) platform in Gujarat's Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) has started trading in eight US stocks from  3rd March, 2022.

Investing in foreign stocks helps investors to diversify their portfolios and increase their investment horizon and overcome the limitation of being bogged down by the Indian stock markets falling for long time at any point of time.    Historically the foreign stocks are less volatile and also give higher returns compared to Indian markets.

Hitherto to invest in US stocks Investors have to undergo very cumbersome and costly process.    One need to open an International trading account, have a US bank account.   Get Indian rupees converted into US Dollars by complying with RBI guidelines before buying US stocks.

NSE International Exchange

NSE IFSC Limited (NSE International Exchange) is a fully owned subsidiary company of National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) which has established an international Exchange in Gujarat International Finance Tech City (GIFT) - International Financial Service Centre (IFSC) Gandhinagar to grow the financial market.

Stock exchanges operating in the GIFT IFSC are permitted to offer trading in securities in any currency other than the Indian rupee.

Trading is permitted inter-alia in equity shares of companies incorporated outside of India by Indian Investors.

NSE IFSC Receipt

Trading in the stocks will be in the form of Unsponsored Depository Receipts.

The receipts are like depository receipts and with the help of these receipts the investor can invest in fractional quantity of the underlying shares and these Receipts can be held in their GIFT city demat accounts.   The fraction receipts are issued as a ratio of the underlying shares.    For example, one share of Apple will be equivalent to 100 NSE IFSC receipts and one share of Amazon will be equivalent to 200 NSE IFSC receipts each.  The rights of holders of these receipts are at par with the holders of the shares in respect of their right to dividend and other corporate actions.   This is a huge advantage to average Indian investors as they will be able to invest in the shares of blue chip US stocks with small amount of capital.   Investor can get started by investing as little as $0.01 but every share will have its own limit.   In Indian markets an investor has to invest in minimum 1 share and multiples thereof but no fractions are allowed.   This route makes the entire process of international investment easy and at a low cost for Indian retail investors

Trading, clearing, settlement and holding of US stocks will be under the regulatory structure of IFSC Authority.

Will the investor become a Member of the company?

The investor holds receipts and hence will not become member / an equity owner of these US companies, but the investor will be entitled to corporate action benefits, like dividends etc.

How many shares are permitted to be traded?

NSE IFSC has got approval to trade in 50 US shares but on 3nd March, 2022 only eight shares out of this 50 will be made available for trading which will gradually increased to 50.   The much sought after Miscrosoft, Nexflex, Apple, Walmart, Telsa, Amazon, Alphabet and Metaplatforms can be traded.

Opening Account with IFSCA Trading Members

An investor who wants in invest in US shares, need to open a Trading and  demat account with IFSC Registered trading members after completing all KYC requirements and Liberalised Remittance Scheme with the bank where investor has account.    There are 36 such brokers now, and include most of the large broking houses in India.  Before trading an Investor need to transfer the required amount from his bank account to trading member’s bank account.   Though the trading currency will be US dollars, it is optional for the Investor either to have a US dollar account with a bank in IFSC area or can remit and receive the amount from their domestic INR account.

As per RBI guidelines the maximum limit under Liberalised Remittance Scheme is US $ 2,50,000 per person per financial year upto which an investor can invest

Taxing of gains

Capital gains made on sale of receipts held for less than two years will be considered as short-term capital gains and be taxed according to the tax slabs applicable to the individual.

For holdings of more than two years, provisions of long-term capital gains will be applicable and the tax rate will be 20%, with the benefit of indexation.

Trading days and hours

The holidays will be as per the US trading holiday and in addition few Indian holidays are also observed as trading holidays.     The trading hours will be from 8:30 pm to 2:30 am next day and this duration falling on two days as per IST will be treated as a single business day.

83 - Fablous recreation of Golden chapter in India Cricket history

Kabhir Khan directed `83’ the first movie of the inspiring journey of rank outsiders - the Indian cricket team -, surprising everyone, including themselves in lifting the world cup is unarguably the best sport based films made till date.    The most challenging aspect in attempting such movie is  risk of making it to be a boring documentary (like the movie on Sachin) or taking too many cinematic liberties and departures thereby killing the true spirit.    It is where Kabir scored full marks in keeping it close to original events cleaverly intermingling it with light hearted moments in dressing room and powerful emotions.    Another challenge is not to make it look  more like Kapil’s centric movie rather than 83 word cup triumph movie

Few minutes into the movie Kabir Khan has established how casually Indian Team, who had a dismal record of winning only one match against East Africa in previous two versions of World cup, was taken by BCCI officials, Cricket Fans, India media not to speak British officials and press.  Manager Mansingh remark that `India got indepdnence but still not respect' sums up it all.   Even most of the India players taking it as a break journey before proceeding on vacation to US.    Amongst such disheartening and negative vibes, it is Kapil who was brimming with self belief which got infected  to entire team soon.

Kabir and his team have to be complimented in recreating the stadiums, electrifying atmosphere, audience emotions and reactions.     The workshops conducted for honing the skills of actors selected in picking up not only the body language but batting, bowling and fielding skills.   Most of the actors, both Indian and foreign, looked like real cricketers.    In this aspect Indian cinema has come a long way.     There was a time whenever few shots of badminton, tennis being played by our leading stars was to be shown, it used to look so awkward with the stars not even holding the racquets properly.

As far as acting is concerned, Ranvir Singh has absolutely nailed Kapil’s role,  in his body language, diction, dialogue delivery, batting & bowling and fielding on the field.   He is the heart and soul of the movie.   Very close to him is seasoned Tamil Actor Jiva as Srikant.    He brought the funny side of Kiri off the field and smash buckling on the field.   Surprisingly lot of footage was given to Sandhu though he did not have that cracking world cup.   May be Kabir Khan might have felt a Sardar character will be very popular in Northern circuits.   Ammy Virk did a good job as Sandhu.     It is disappointing that the stars of 83 world cup Yashpal, Mohinder and Binny were not given the deserved footage, Lala Amarnath (played by his son Mohinder Amarnath) getting more prominence role than Mohinder.   As far as other teams which Indian Team faced, too much focus was kept on West Indies.   Australia and England were reduced to a passing reference with no player among galaxy of star Australian and England players getting registered.    Among West Indian players actors who did the roles of Richards and Gomes did good job, the look alikes of West Indies fast bowlers are big letdown.  The record breaking and match saving innings by Kapil, which unfortunately was not recorded and televised due to strike by BBC staff, was very well recreated.   Though we hardly know anything about Team Manager Man Singh, Pankaj Tiwari, as usual, did a great job.   Bomman Iran as a commentator was full of emotions is interesting.

Kids adjusting their TV antennas risking coming out during curfew, PM Indira Gandhi advising his officers to make sure every house hold watch the semi final over TV so as to control communal tensions  are few of the many non cricketing anecdotes.

I personally could related to the movie, as i started watching world cup matches since 1979 and 1983 world cup very keenly as India went from strength to strength and its lifting world cup in a folklorist manner.    Those were the days when Indian team was treated as a push over and least preferred team to be invited for bilateral matches, though we had some of the world star players like Gavaskar, Vishwanath, the spin foursome.   It’s the 1983 World cup win which has given a self belief to Indian team that they can beat any team in ODIs .   After this win there was no looking back and Indian Cricket and BCCI has gone from strength to strength and became so powerful that at present it commands the world cricket through IPL.

Those who are in the age group of 50 and above can relate and enjoy 83 well.    But how much fancy youngster, including ardent cricket fans, take to this glorious saga which has happened 38 years ago is to be seen and the commercial success of the movie depends a lot on that.   Whatever may the commercial success but Kabir Khan and his team of technicians and actors should be appreciated for such a sincere effort.

Strongly recommended to all to hail the dare devilry of Kapil Devils.
