The much hyped and anticipated Brahmastra, co-produced by Karan Johar is releasing on 9th September, 2022.   The Rs. 400 crores mega budget fantasy action adventure will be a `make or break movie’ for many – Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor – fresh from disasters Liger and Shamshera respectively and Ayan Mukerjee.

What may work in favour of the Movie?

·     For a change the `Hindu’ bashing Bollywood has taken a subject based on Hindu mythological character – Shiv in first of the trilogy.

·    A massive Rs. 400 crores were pumped in majority of which on visual effects to bring out a sleek product

·        Karan johar has made top stars lend their support to Ranbir and Alia.   Amibath, Nagarjuna and Sharkh Khan are having small and not so small cameos.

·    An unprecedented pre-release publicity.    Karan johar has not spared any efforts.   The movie is releasing simultaneous in all south Indian languages apart from Hindi and he has roped in top stars of every industry for pre-release publicity – Nagarjuna, Jr NTR and SS Rajamouli in Telugu.

What can work against the movie?

·         The boycott Bollywood sentiment and Karan Johar being one of the biggest targets of this trend

·         Ranbir Kapoor not being bankable star to pull off a mega budget movie as proved with Shamshera

·       Both Amitabh and Nagarjuna have passed their prime.   They may do their role competently but their box office pull at present is hardly anything to boast off specially of Nagarjuna who is returning to Bollywood after two decades.   Sharukh khan may only flare up the boycott sentiment.

·         The biggest harakari the makers have done in casting is going for Mouni Roy for antagonist role.   A big budget movie like this need a very powerful antagonist and Hindi movie history has no precedent of a female actor doing justice to a power antagonist role.

·        Hindi industry is never good or known for making fantasy movies and do not connect well with mythological backdrops.   No Hindi star ever could pull off such roles and Rabir can hardly be expected to do anything different.

·        Ayan Mukherji, director of the movie, is known to direct small budget off beat type of movies.   Karan took a huge risk by handing over the reins to Ayan

·         The movie has been in making for over 5 years which many times shows on quality and continuity of the movie.

·         As happening with many Hindi movies these days, the music has not yet registered

·         Going by the teasers, the special effects seems to be too gaudy and more of fire balls.   One has to wait to see how much they contribute to the success of the movie.

All in all BRAHMASTRA is a very crucial movie to Ranbir, Karan and Hindi industry itself, all of them badly need a blockbuster Hit.  Obviously the remaining two instalments of the trilogy will depend on the success of this Astra – Brahmastra.

The first day advance bookings are very lukewarm and let us hope it picks up in the week end.
